WOMEN'S SOCCER POISED FOR A BIG FINISH
The Las Positas women’s soccer team, one of the state’s hottest teams with an 11-game unbeaten streak, will hit the road this week for matches at West Valley on Tuesday and Evergreen Valley on Friday.
The Hawks (9-1-2, 3-0-2) are coming off a hard-fought 2-2 draw with fellow Coast-North power City College of San Francisco (8-1-3, 4-0-1), in which all the scoring came in the first half.
After Yesica Morales scored in the eighth minute to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead, CCSF pulled ahead with goals in the 17th and 32nd minutes. Las Positas’s Camila Fonseca equalized in the 40th minute.
Goalkeeper Ali Nunes preserved the tie with 10 big saves.
Britni Myhre entered the week tied for 18th in the state in scoring with 12 goals, and Morales is tied for 23rd with 11 goals. With 12 assists, Morales is third in the state in that department, and Fonseca is tied for fourth with 11 assists.
With five teams battling closely for the Coast-North top spot, the Hawks’ game at Evergreen Valley (8-5-2, 5-1) represents a marquee matchup. The Hawks will face another stern road test at Coast-South leader Ohlone (10-2-2, 4-1-1) on Nov. 1. They are at Canada (8-4-1, 4-2 Coast-North) on Nov. 6.
The only Las Positas loss came against powerful Diablo Valley, 3-2, in the season opener.
Marco Neves entered the week No. 2 in the state in scoring with 20 goals and third in total points with 47.
In a dramatic week for the Hawks (9-5-2, 3-3-1 Coast-North), they notched an impressive 2-1 win over host CCSF (8-4-1, 5-1-1) in the Coast-North, but then fell 4-3 to Hartnell (9-1-5, 4-0-3 Coast-South) in a conference crossover match.
Against CCSF, Neves gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead off an Antonio Jimenez assist. After CCSF equalized on a goal by Mark Estevez in the 77th minute, Mike Hatch pushed forward for the winner off a Nick Tucker assist. Goalkeepers Jose Elizondo and Julio Naranjo each had five saves.
In the wild one against Hartnell, Hatch and Neves scored in the first half off assists from Takashi Fukushima and Tucker as the Hawks held a 2-1 lead. Hartnell pulled ahead 3-2 in the second half, before Lalo Aguilar equalized off a double-assist from Fukushima and Matt Hafizi. However, Hartnell stole the victory with a goal in the 85th minute by Wily Miranda.
Classy playmakers Fukushima and Jimenez are tied for 10th in the state in assists with eight apiece.
The big tests will keep coming for the Hawks. They will host Coast-North contender Skyline (6-5-3, 4-2-1) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Hawks are also at Foothill on Friday.
After dropping a heartbreaker 5-4 at rival Ohlone (8-8-1, 4-0-1) in a Coast-North showdown, the Hawks (9-10, 6-1) rebounded with a 14-6 romp over CCSF.
The Hawks will host winless Laney on Wednesday, before having a showdown against strong Foothill on Friday in Livermore in the Coast-North.
The Hawks (1-17, 1-4) fell against Ohlone 18-8 in conference action last week, and lost to Ohlone 12-5 in the De Anza Tournament.
