Las Positas Sports Roundup, Dec. 12

LAS POSITAS MEN'S BASKETBALL SHIFTING INTO HIGH GEAR A rapidly emerging state power, the Las Positas men’s basketball team beat host Skyline 84-77 in Sunday’s championship game of the Skyline tournament, the Hawks’ fourth consecutive victory.

The Hawks (12-2) opened the tourney with a dominating 84-62 win over Redwoods, and then beat Reedley 88-70 in the semifinals. Las Positas, which is off this week, will host De Anza Dec. 20 in its only action next week.

The Hawks are looking to build on a memorable 2015-16 season in which they advanced to a Sweet 16 state berth and broke three school records in coach James Giacomazzi’s impressive first season. They won 10 in a row at one point.

Now Las Positas is expected to annually be a top team in the state, as evidenced by its No. 1 or 2 preseason ranking in the region.

Plus, the Hawks are keeping top local talent in the fold, adding vitality to the program.

“That’s a huge reason for our success,” said Giacomazzi, whose team opened the season by winning its own tournament.

Giacomazzi has a long track record of graduating players and helping them advance to the four-year level. Before being hired at Las Positas, he was the head coach at Cosumnes River-Sacramento for 11 years, where his teams won two Big 8 Conference titles, reached the postseason six times, and made five appearances in the CCCAA Sweet Sixteen.

He was Big 8 Coach of the Year twice.

Through the first nine games this season, four Hawks players were averaging in double figures: Keith Hunter (Oakland High, 15.1 ppg), Caleb Baskett (Washington High, 13.5 ppg), Stokley Chaffey (Amador Valley, 13.0 ppg), and Kameron Johnson (Granada, 11.0 ppg).

The team is gearing up for another highly challenging Coast-North season, beginning Jan. 4 at Foothill in Los Altos.

The Hawks (4-6) fell twice in the Fresno City tournament last week, 82-45 to Big 8 power Diablo Valley (11-2) and 87-71 to Merced. Las Positas will look to rebound in the Monterey Peninsula tournament, beginning Thursday.
