Las Positas Weekly Sports Recap, Sept. 5

The Las Positas College women’s soccer team, under coach Paul Sapsford, blazed to three straight victories to open the new season.

The Hawks beat Cypress College 5-0, Irvine Valley College 2-1 and Cosumnes River 1-0. Camila Fonseca has a goal and five assists (tied for second in the state) and Paula Samaniego has two goals and two assists. Rocio Perez has a goal and an assist. Scoring one goal are Rhiannon Adams, Danielle Klessel, Meghan Giamona, and Azariah Douglas.
 
In the shutout, Jennifer Parker and Elle Ray each worked a spotless half in goal. Douglas had the dramatic winner in the 90th minute. Samaniego scored both goals against Irvine Valley off assists from Giamona and Fonseca.
 
The Hawks will look to keep soaring at home against Ventura and Canyons in the Las Positas Tournament at 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.
 

Men’s soccer


The Hawks (1-1) opened the season with a 5-0 win over Merritt and a 2-1 loss against powerful Fresno City, which finished No. 2 in the state last season.
 
Jake Foscalina stole the show against Merritt with four goals and an assist. Joseph Vargas Diaz added two assists and Brannon Dwyer had eight saves in the shutout.
 
All the scoring came in the first half in the Fresno match. Matt Hafizi gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead off a double assist from Lucas Parodi and Pedro Madruga. But the Rams rallied.
