Young Team Picks up Where They Left Off

A young #HawkNation team is off to a smashing start in the new season under coach Paul Sapsford.

After dismantling Marin 10-0 in the season opener, the Hawks (3-0) went down south and made a statement – make that two statements. They beat San Diego Mesa 4-1 and Long Beach 2-0, both in the prestigious New Balance Community College Showcase, hosted by Ventura College.

Against Marin, the Hawks scored five times in each half. Sophomore Meghan Giamona scored the team’s first two goals of the season, followed by two goals by freshman Gabriella Polizzi. Freshman Tyanne Woodyard Smit also scored twice during the onslaught. Also scoring were freshmen Araceli Hinojosa, Jocelyn Hernandez, Alexis Xaysana, and Jasmine Loaiza.

Giamona had another big game against San Diego Mesa with two goals and two assists. The Hawks overcame an own goal in the 23rd minute to go on a 4-0 run, all the damage coming in the final 29 minutes. After Giamona scored back-to-back goals off assists by Sofia Escalante and Camryn Adams, Hinojosa and Polizzi scored in the 79th and 85th minutes off Giamona assists.

Against Long Beach, goalkeepers Anjelica Gonzalez (5 saves) and Elise Espinoza (4 saves) combined on the shutout. Hinojosa got the Hawks off to a fantastic start with a goal in the first minute assisted by Polizzi. Giamona added the insurance goal in the 68th minute off a Paola Samaniego pass. Giamona ranks among the state scoring leaders with five goals.

The Hawks face Ventura College (1-1-1) Thursday, September 6 at Hawk Field located on the campus of Las Positas College. Kick-off is at 7:30 and free Hot Cocoa will be provided to the first 50 fans in attendance.
