Hawks overpower skyline in final tune-up before the playoffs

The men's team entered The Nest for their final home contest of the regular season looking to gain momentum heading into the playoffs.

Prior to tip-off, HawkNation sophomores Anand Hundal, Jushan Samra, Nick "The Microwave" Evans, and Jason Augliera took a moment at half court to be recognized for their contributions to the Men's Basketball program. Also recognized was first-year player Hakim Tokhi who, after earning a 4.0 during his time at LPC, will be heading to San Diego State in the fall. Also recognized was redshirt freshman big man Peter Hewitt who will be competing at the Division I level next season as he heads to The University of Tulsa on an athletic scholarship.

With the game underway, HawkNation maintained a small lead as the teams traded buckets as well as defensive stops on their way to a 27-26 contest with eight minutes remaining in the first half. Anand Hundal and Alvon Marshall anchored the offense with eight and seven points respectively. The back and forth continued over the remainder of the half with HawkNation using their balanced inside-out scoring attack to head into intermission up 44-43. For the half, Hundal led the team in scoring with 10, followed by Hewitt with 8, Marshall with 7, Augliera with 6, Samra with 5, Evans with 5, and Goooooooose Persin with a triple.

Four minutes into the half, HawkNation stretched the lead to thirteen, 62-49, mainly behind the versatile play of Anand Hundal. A dunk by Hewitt off an alley-oop from floor general John Ketchel, and a three by sharp-shooting Jason Augliera provided the Hawks the extra fire power they needed. As the period progressed, skyline would pull within seven around the 11:13 mark before HawkNation would reassert themselves on both sides of the ball, and more importantly, on the boards to extend their lead to 74-60 lead with eight minutes remaining in the contest.

The pace of the contest slowed as the Hawks went into their ball control offense. With 2:53 remaining in the contest, HawkNation held a 10-point lead, 79-69. Anand Hundal would clean up a...less than crisp pass to put the Hawks up 12 with 2:30 left. A Ketchel bucket off a baseline drive and a three from the corner by the visiting team resulted in a nine point Las Positas lead, 83-74, with 1:37 remaining. Jushan Samra's tip-in, two from the charity stripe by Hundal, and Alvon Marshall going 1-2 from the line and final lay-up to beat the shot clock pushed the lead to 90-75, which would be the final score.

Anand Hundal paced the Hawks with 25, Alvon Marshall contributed 16 (behind three 3's), Peter Hewitt and Nick Evans contributed 12, Jason Augliera finished with 9, Jushan Samra had 7, John Ketchel had 6, and Goose Persin rounded out the scoring with three.

With a strong showing in the second half of the conference season, the Hawks are poised for a playoff run. They will learn who their first-round playoff opponent is early next week.
