STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE BACK!!

Las Positas College’s glistening basketball gymnasium, aka The Nest, will be the action spot this week with the return of the CCCAA men’s and women’s state basketball championships.

Defending champion City College of San Francisco, the North No. 1 seed, and Fullerton, the South No. 1, will top the "Elite Eight" men’s tourney, which begins on Thursday. Feather River, which eliminated Las Positas 101-95 Saturday night in the playoffs, is the North No. 2.

The women’s “Elite Eight” will begin on Friday at Las Positas, topped by defending champion and South No. 1 Mt. San Antonio and North No. 1 College of the Sequoias. Coast Conference-North Division champion CCSF is the North No. 2 seed.

The CCSF men feature former Berkeley High star Zach Copeland, a sophomore guard averaging 18.8 points a game, along with Ethan Richardson (11.9 ppg), Armani Collins (10.4 ppg) and Eddie Stansbury (10.0 ppg). CCSF ranks fifth in the state averaging 85.1 points.

HAWKS FALL SHORT: The Las Positas men fell short of their goal to be playing this week – six points short, to be exact -- but the Hawks can still take pride in their accomplishments overall. A 22-win season, which included a cherished road victory over City College of San Francisco and a playoff triumph over East Bay-rival Diablo Valley, will just have to do.

The men’s and women’s state basketball championships will return to Ventura College in 2018 and 2019.

HALL OF FAME: Former Golden State Warrior, Arizona Wildcat and Cerritos College player Tom Tolbert, known as ‘Mr. T’ on KNBR, will be inducted into the CCCMBCA Hall of Fame at a breakfast at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Crowne Plaza. Other inductees: DVC coach Steve Coccimiglio, Jack Hirsch (Los Angeles Valley), Justin Love (Canada-Redwood City), Lester Strong (Moorpark), Royce Youree (West Hills). Inducted posthumously: Larry Friend (Los Angeles City), Eli Sherman (East Los Angeles).

Tolbert led Cerritos to a 29-3 record in 1985-86 and averaged 16.2 points and 7.8 rebounds a game. He next played for Lute Olson at Arizona. As a senior, Tolbert averaged 14.1 points as Arizona reached the Final Four. He is a color commentator for the Warriors.
