The Las Positas men's basketball team got a clutch performance from Nana Appiah in a bounce-back 79-76 win over Skyline on Jan. 25 in the Coast Conference-North Division.

"Oh man, we needed that," said Hawks coach James Giacomazzi of the tight victory, which came two days after a rough loss to state No. 2 CCSF.

With the sharp Wesley Burse out for the Skyline game, Appiah, of Patterson, stepped up with 13 points, five assists, three rebounds and two blocks. Tyler Langowski and Marc Starling were also solid off the bench.

"Appiah came in and did a good job for us," Giacomazzi said. "He guarded the best player for the majority of the game … He contributed what Wesley would have given us."

Freshman Michael Hayes, ranked third in the state in scoring at 23.4 per game, led the Hawks (16-4, 4-1) with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Alafia Oluwosogo (14 points, 6 rebounds) and Goose Persin (10 points, 5 rebounds) also delivered stout efforts.

The victory took some of the sting off the 92-63 loss to visiting CCSF, which outrebounded the Hawks 56-32. Burse had a huge game in the loss with 32 points, converting 7 of 11 from 3-point range, 10 of 16 from the floor and 5 of 6 from the free throw line. Hayes also had an incredible jam off an inbound lob from John Ketchel from the base line, in which Hayes circled to the basket after a brief stumble, elevated and hammered it home it with his left hand.

The Hawks, who have won eight of their past nine, will open the second half of the conference season at home against Canada at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and then will host Foothill on Friday. NorCalSportsTV will stream the DH on Friday.
