Hakeem Ward brings a tough, hard working mentality, along with many other great attributes and more than 10 years of coaching experience that will contribute to the sidelines for the Las Positas Community College Men's Basketball Program.
Before pursuing coaching, Ward had a long and fruitful career as a Collegiate Athlete and Professional European Basketball Player. Ward began his college career under Hall of Fame Coach, Phil Mathews at Ventura College in the summer of 1994. Ward was very successful under Mathews' leadership as a back-to-back California State Champion, while also earning California State Player of the Year in 1995 & 1996.
After graduating from Ventura College, Ward was recruited and continued his success at the University of San Francisco. He was named to the 1st Team All-Conference for the West Coast Conference (WCC) from 1996-1998, earned Most Valuable Player of the WCC 1998, and led his team to the 1998 NCAA Tournament, where they fell to the eventual NCAA National Champions, University of Utah. Ward graduated with his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from USF in 1998.
Ward continued his career overseas as a Professional Athlete in Europe. He spent seven years playing in France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, the Netherlands and Spain. He also spent a stint of time in Central America playing in Colombia before returning home to America.
Upon returning home to New Jersey, Ward coached several AAU teams. However, over the last six seasons, Ward was an Assistant Coach at his alma mater, Ventura College, under Head Coach Joey Ramirez. Ward assisted Ramirez in leading the Pirates to achieve multiple Western State Conference titles in 2013, 2016 and 2017. Ward was also influential in recruiting top student-athletes, around the country, who helped lead the Ventura College Men's Basketball Team to multiple conference titles while assisting the majority of his student-athletes in graduating to four-year institutions in California.
In 2011 Ward was inducted into the Ventura College Athletic Hall of Fame and in May 2019 Hakeem Ward received his Masters Degree in Science in Physical Education from Azuza Pacific University.
When Ward is not coaching, he teaches Physical Education at a community school in Oakland, CA. He also spends plenty of time giving back to the communities he serves - all while he continues to pursue his dream of becoming a Head Collegiate Men's Basketball Coach. What brings Hakeem Ward the most joy is watching his 8 year old son play soccer and teaching him the game of basketball.
