Hawks face Mendo in Tip-Off Classic opener

Las Positas won't exactly tip off the season in the annual Tony Costello Tip-Off Classic, but the Hawks' goal is to win the tournament, nonetheless.

LPC, with one game already under its belt, takes on Mendocino at 5 p.m. Nov. 5 in a first-round game in Livermore. The Hawks, who finished fourth last year, have won their own tourney 3 times in the event's previous 9 years.

To advance to the semifinals, LPC will have to defeat a Mendocino team that went 10-16 last year and finished sixth in the Bay Valley Conference. The Hawks are the only squad in the tourney's 8-team field that will have played a game prior to the Tip-Off Classic.

The winner of the LPC-Mendocino game will face the winner of the 7 p.m. first-round matchup between Siskiyous and Sacramento City.

First-round games in the top half of the bracket have Butte playing Diablo Valley at 1 p.m., and Contra Costa taking on defending champion Columbia at 3 p.m.

Butte and Diablo Valley enter as the only teams ranked in the coaches' preseason poll. Butte is ranked #10 in Northern California, while DVC is #8 in NorCal and #15 in the state.

The tourney continues Nov. 6 and concludes with the championship game at 4 p.m. Nov. 7.
