400 win graphic for coach giacomazzi

Giacomazzi is now Mr. 400

by Matt Schab

Las Positas men's basketball coach James Giacomazzi got his landmark 400th career win with a triumph over Shasta, 90-75, in the Cosumnes River tourney on Friday.

With the win, he had a 400-220 record in CA community college coaching over 21 seasons. He also earned win number 401 the next night, 102-56 over Lassen, to complete the tourney.

He has a 199-78 record at Las Positas, in his 11th season after coming over from Cosumnes River in 2015. The high-flying LPC Hawks (10-0) are ranked No. 5 in the state.

How does it feel to reach 400?

"It feels great, man," Giacomazzi said. "It makes you have a little perspective on just how long you've been coaching. It goes by so fast … You put your head down, you coach 'em up, you've got your team, and before you know it these wins keep racking up. It's just a nice accomplishment, and there's a lot of hands that are a part of it."

The Hawks were led by Jaden Woodard against Shasta. He had 26 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and a steal. Ted Bigg-Wither also had a big night with 23 points (9-12 FG, 5-5 FT) and 16 rebounds, an assist, and two steals. Isaiah Minor and Richard Banks both had 14 points. Minor had six steals.

Against Lassen, Minor and Kodey Weary both had 15 points, and Bigg-Wither had 14. Bigg-Wither and Banks were all-tournament picks.

"They continue to get better," Giacomazzi said of his team. "They continue to work very hard." He added that his players are a "fun bunch to coach. They're really talented, they play for one another and that's just fun to be a part of."

He started out as a head coach at Cosumnes River, enjoying a highly successful 11 years.

Previous to that he was an assistant under legendary Percy Carr at San Jose City. He also played for local legend Guin Boggs at Washington High in Fremont; also playing at San Jose City and UC Riverside.
Coach G credits family support, having really good players and outstanding assistant coaches as keys to sustained success.

"I've always said that any head coach, they're as good as their assistant coaches," he said. "They're the unsung heroes because of all the work they do behind the scenes."
