by Matt Schab
The Las Positas men's basketball team notched its 13th consecutive win to open the season, 91-67 over host Folsom Lake on Dec. 19.
With City College of San Francisco's recent loss to West Valley, Las Positas and Santa Ana (13-0) are the only remaining unbeaten teams in the state.
Las Positas was ranked No. 5 in the Dec. 8 California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association poll.
Sophomores Jaden Woodard, Richard Banks and Kodey Weary played key roles against Folsom. Woodard had a game-high 25 points, going 9 for 11 on free throws. Banks was in top form with 20 points, seven steals and six rebounds. Weary had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, along with four blocks.
Last year, the Hawks opened the season with 20 straight wins in advancing to the quarterfinals of the 3C2A State playoffs for the second time in program history.
Ted Bigg-Wither, 6-9 freshman from Australia, continues to bring the thunder from Down Under. He had 11 rebounds and seven points against Folsom Lake and is No. 3 in the state in field goal percentage at 71.4 and No. 4 in blocks with 30, one spot ahead of Weary (39). Banks is No. 4 in steals with 40.
After the Christmas break, Las Positas will host tough San Jose at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3. The Hawks will open the Coast North season at Cañada in Redwood City on Jan. 7. They will host De Anza on Dec. 9 in conference play.
