SOARING HAWKS HAVE SHOWDOWNS AHEAD

by Matt Schwab

The Las Positas men's basketball team has a hop in its step as enters the meat of its Coast Coast-North Division schedule this week.

The Hawks (15-1, 2-0), ranked No. 9 in the state, collected back-to-back wins over Cañada, 81-63, and De Anza, 82-71, last week to open conference play. The Hawks will host district-rival Chabot (13-3, 2-0), ranked tied for No. 26 in the state, at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Las Positas will travel to Skyline on Friday, Jan. 16.

Las Positas, Chabot and State No. 1 City College of San Francisco (13-1, 2-0) entered the week tied atop the Coast-North.

Jaden Woodard led the way against De Anza on Friday with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Kodey Weary, with 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Ted Bigg-Wither, with 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, also had double-doubles.
Richard Banks filled the stat sheet with nine points, 10 assists, five rebounds, and three blocks.

In the Hawks' conference opener against host Cañada, they rebounded strongly from their first loss of the season. They upped a 10-point lead halftime to 28 points at the finish.
Weary paced the offense with 23 points. Khristian Holmes had a big effort off the bench with 20 points, going 7 for 15 from the floor, and Banks added 12 points.

Chabot also upended two opponents to open conference play, besting host Skyline 84-64 in the opener and taking a thriller over College of No. 21 San Mateo 77-75 in overtime. The wins set the stage for Wednesday's showdown.
