POWER PLAYERS — NO. 6 IN STATE
by Matt Schwab
With two lopsided victories last week in the Coast Conference-North Division, the Las Positas men's basketball team moved up a spot to No. 6 in the Top 30 CCCMBCA state poll (Feb. 16).
The Hawks improved to 24-2 overall and 11-1 in conference with blowouts of Skyline, 97-58, and Ohlone, 93-73. They are one win away from matching their program record for conference wins in a season set in 2021-22.
Other major program records within reach are season conference mark (12-2) and overall record (27-4). Against Ohlone, Kodey Weary and Ted Bigg-Wither had double-doubles. Weary had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Bigg-Wither had 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Richard Banks sizzled with 21 points, six steals, four rebounds, and three assists. Las Positas shot 54.5 percent as a team from the field as Weary, Banks and Bigg-Wither were a combined 21 of 39.
Against Skyline, Jaden Woodard led the balanced effort with a game-high 26 points. Five Hawks reached double-digit scoring, also including Cole Loud (12 points), Khristian Holmes (12), Bigg-Wither (11), Weary (10). All but one player scored, and the one who didn't, Banks, had nine assists. The Hawks shot 60.3 percent from the field and an impressive 55 percent from 3-point range.
Las Positas will host College of San Mateo on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and travel to No. 2-ranked City College of San Francisco on Friday at 7 p.m.The CCSF Rams (25-1, 12-0) lead the Hawks by a game in the standings, so an LPC upset victory in San Francisco would produce a co-championship if both teams also win their games on Wednesday. Woodard is ranked 18th in the state in scoring averaging 18 points a game. Bigg-Wither is No. 4 in the state in field goal percentage at 49.4 and No. 2 in blocks with 70, and Banks leads CA with 96 steals.
