Memorable Run Ends For Young Hawks
by Matt Schwab
A fine season ended for the young Las Positas men's soccer team with a 2-0 loss to No. 2 seed and host Hartnell Saturday in Round 2 of the 3C2A Regional Playoffs.Hawks head coach Andy Cumbo sure enjoyed the ride in 2025.
"This year was another strong one for the men's team. It was another talented team, but what set this group apart was its chemistry," Cumbo said. "While they were extremely competitive with each other, it was a close-knit group."
Freshman goalkeeper Sahib Sandhu was excellent against Hartnell, as usual.
"Sahib constantly came up big for the team; he was a goalkeeper keeping us in the game," Cumbo said.
Las Positas (13-5-5), seeded 15th, defeated No. 18 Butte 1-0 in Round 1 on a first-half goal by Alexis Gutierrez assisted by Dayton Dillman.
A year ago, the Hawks advanced to Round 3 of the playoffs as the 17th seed.
Against explosive uh Hartnell, which had a first-round bye, the Panthers scored twice in the first half and held off the Hawks, who fought hard in a very competitive contest. The Las Positas defense stayed organized and competed well.
Overall, the Hawks played at a high level this season in all aspects. The stage appears set for even more success next season.
"Angel Rondan was a steady and resilient center back for us, helping finish their plays and starting ours," Cumbo said. "Arteen (Arianmanesh) had a very good year in the attacking half; he was our most productive player offensively."
Cumbo also pointed out freshman stalwarts Hadi Jaber, Dayton Dillman, Alejandro Ramirez, Jose Valencia and Angel Calderon for their consistent leadership among a talented freshman class.
"Our team was extremely young, with only four sophomores starting in the playoffs. I'm optimistic about our future," Cumbo said.
