Short-handed LPC wins conference opener in OT

Erika Duarte grabs a rebound against Ohlone. It was a bad sign for the Hawks on Wednesday night that they had more players with crutches on the bench than available players.

But somehow, LPC made it work.

Cayla Nava and Brianna Gay combined for 44 points as the Hawks outlasted Ohlone 63-56 in overtime in both teams' Coast Conference North Division opener in Fremont.

The Hawks (12-5, 1-0), who have played most of the season without starting point guard Taylor Marshall, do not have the services of another starting guard, Jasmine Odell, or reserve guard Precious Kol, both of whom are nursing ankle injuries. Thus, LPC faced Ohlone with only six available players.

Fortunately for LPC, it was playing an Ohlone team that dressed only seven players itself and entered the game winless on the season. What's more, the Hawks had just beaten the Renegades, albeit in double-overtime, on Dec. 29.

For at least the first half Wednesday, it looked like Ohlone (0-11, 0-1) had a shot at its first victory. The Renegades led 22-18 after a first half in which Gay kept LPC in the game with 16 points as no other Hawks player scored until Chelsea Bantley's bucket with 4:18 left in the half.

Nava, LPC's leading scorer, was held scoreless in the first two quarters before exploding for 15 points in the third on 4 three-pointers and a 1 three-point play. The Hawks led 39-35 entering the fourth period.

Ohlone held a 49-48 lead late in the fourth, but Erika Duarte made 1 of 2 free throws to force overtime.

Kristjan Aubry made her first 2 baskets of the night--the first a three--to begin the extra period well for LPC. Ohlone pulled within 58-56 with 31 seconds remaining, but the Hawks put the game away at the foul line.

Nava finished with 23 points, and Gay had 21. Bantley, the team's only reserve, finished with 8 points.

LPC's next game is Friday at 7 p.m. against San Jose City College in Livermore.
