LPC suffers 1st conference loss
The Hawks’ first home game in nearly two months didn’t end as planned Friday night as LPC fell 69-63 to San Jose City College in a Coast Conference North Division game.
The loss evened the Hawks’ conference record at 1-1 and dropped their overall mark to 12-6. San Jose improved to 7-9 and 2-0.
Chelsea Bantley came off the bench to lead LPC in scoring with 14 points. Teammates Sarah Rodriguez (13 points), Kristjan Aubry (11) and Erika Duarte (10) also scored in double figures.
Playing its second straight game without starting point guard and second-leading scorer Jasmine Odell, LPC trailed 31-26 at halftime. The Hawks were within 37-35 seven minutes into the second half, but ended the third quarter trailing 48-39.
San Jose began the final period with 6 consecutive points, giving the Lady Jaguars their biggest lead of the game at 54-39. However, Bantley made a bucket, Aubry hit a three-pointer, and Brianna Gay scored on a layup to give LPC some hope, cutting its deficit to 54-46.
The Lady Jaguars then scored 5 straight points, building their lead back up to 13 at 59-46 with 5:07 remaining. LPC never got closer than the final margin of 6 points after that.
San Jose did a nice job bottling up Hawks’ leading scorer Cayla Nava all night, giving her little room to get off her shot. Nava, who entered averaging 19.5 points, did not score until hitting a three with 1:55 remaining. She hit another three a minute later and finished with 6 points.
