Hawks fall to Redwoods in Hawk Classic semifinals

LPC's comeback effort fell short Friday night as the Hawks lost 76-68 to Redwoods  in the semfinals of the Hawk Classic in Livermore.

With the loss, LPC's first of the season after two victories, the Hawks will play in Saturday's 1 p.m. third-place game against Modesto, which fell 85-55 to Contra Costa in the other semifinal.

Redwoods and Contra Costa play for the tournament title at 3 p.m. Saturday. Cuesta, which beat Merritt 83-34, and Marin, which defeated El Camino-Compton Center 66-55, square off for the consolation title at 11 a.m.

The Hawks were paced by Cayla Nava's 24 points. Teammate Brianna Gay added 10 points and 17 rebounds. Erika Duarte contributed 10 rebounds.

LPC got off to a slow start against Redwoods as its starting backcourt of Jasmine Odell and Taylor Marshall picked up 2 fouls each in the game's first 4 minutes and went to the bench. The Hawks trailed 22-10 at the end of one quarter, but with Odell and Marshall back in the game to start the second period, they moved within 30-25 with 3 minutes left in the first half.

However, Redwoods entered halftime with a 44-32 lead then stretched its advantage to 48-32 by scoring the first two buckets of the second half. The Hawks made a mini-run minutes later when Odell hit 4 free throws, and Gay scored inside to trim the deficit to 51-45.

It was 59-52 after three quarters and 61-52 two minutes into the fourth period before Odell scored on a layup, Marshall scored on a putback, Nava hit a three, and Gay scored again inside during a 9-2 LPC run that pulled the Hawks within 63-61 with 5 minutes remaining.

But Odell fouled out shortly thereafter, and after Redwoods hit consecutive three-pointers, LPC could not get closer than 5 points the rest of the way.
