Nava leads LPC over Modesto

Jasmine Odell named to the all-tournament team. Cayla Nava scored 20 points, including an 11-point outburst during a two-and-a-half minute span in the fourth quarter Saturday to lead the Hawks to a 68-57 victory over Modesto in the third-place game of the Hawk Classic in Livermore.

Erika Duarte came off the bench to score 18 points for the Hawks (3-1). Jasmine Odell scored 9 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

Contra Costa won the tourney title, beating Redwoods 103-74 in the championship game.

LPC led Modesto 17-10 after one quarter before losing starting point guard Taylor Marshall to a left knee injury early in the second period. Marshall’s knee buckled on a drive to the basket, and she had to be helped off the court. She did not return.

In her absence, Duarte scored 10 points in the second quarter as the Hawks forged a 38-21 halftime lead.

Modesto scored the first 6 points of the third quarter, but the Hawks steadied and entered the final period with a 48-35 advantage. It was 50-42 before Nava’s outburst.

Nava, who scored 24 points the night before against Redwoods, hit a floater on the baseline, then rebounded a missed Modesto shot, weaved her way up the court before stepping back and nailing a three-pointer.

She then converted a three-point play, and after a Modesto three, Nava hit another three for a 61-45 lead with 5:04 left in the game. Modesto could not get closer than 8 points the rest of the game. Nava finished the game with 5 three-pointers.

The Hawks have a week off before their next game, Nov. 21 against Cabrillo in Aptos.

In the consolation title game, Cuesta defeated Marin 63-47.
