Odell powers LPC past Cabrillo in season opener
Just when LPC looked to be running out of gas Wednesday night, Jasmine Odell provided the fuel.
Odell scored two huge buckets down the stretch to help the Hawks hold off Cabrillo 69-62 in the season-opener in Livermore.
The sophomore guard from Manteca finished with a team-high 23 points on 11-for-14 shooting. She also pulled down 13 rebounds, recorded 7 steals, dished out 2 assists, and blocked a shot.
Teammates Erika Duarte (8-for-8 from the free throw line) and Cayla Nava added 12 points each, and Brianna Gay had 10 to help LPC begin the 2015-16 season on a winning note.
And for a while, it appeared that a victory would come fairly easily. The Hawks, who led 35-29 at halftime, went on an 8-0 run early in the third quarter on a three-point shot by Taylor Marshall, a three-point play by Odell, and a layup by Odell to build a 45-32 advantage.
Three minutes later, LPC went on a 9-2 run to build its biggest lead of the game at 54-38. It was 62-49 early in the fourth quarter before Cabrillo mounted a furious comeback.
Over the next four-and-a-half minutes, Cabrillo outscored LPC 12-1 to move within 63-62 with 3:02 remaining.
That's when Odell saved the day by scoring on consecutive layups to kill Cabrillo's momentum. Marshall and Krisjan Aubrey made 1 free throw each to finish the scoring.
LPC has a week off before hosting the Hawk Classic on Nov. 12-14. The Hawks open tourney play with a first-round matchup against El Camino-Compton Center at 7 p.m. View the bracket.
