Hawks pick up first win over Gavilan

The Las Positas women's basketball team notched its sweet first win of the season, 54-51 over visiting Gavilan on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at Tony Costello Court.

Freshman sensation Monique Cavness (El Cerrito HS) upped her state-leading rebounding average with 22 boards, 20 points, two assists and a block. Ranaye Manu (Patterson) tacked on 15 points, four rebounds and a block.

Cavness now tops the state averaging 17.0 rebounds a game.

The Hawks got a boost from the bench as Karina Mora (Millenium) had nine points and three steals and Semaj Steen (Lathrop) had eight points,11 rebounds, two assists and a block.

The Hawks next fell to Hartnell 66-40 and College of San Mateo 76-49. Manu poured in 22 points against Hartnell and Cavness had 15 points and 19 boards. Manu added 14 points against CSM and Cavness pulled down 18 boards and added 13 points.
