Las Positas College made history at the 3C2A Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving State Championships at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.
In the three-day meet that saw numerous close finishes, the Hawks earned multiple state championships in the same season for the first time.
Samantha Fehr prevailed in the women's 100-yard breaststroke in a school-record time of 1 minute, 04.09 seconds, and Filuka Houborg took the women's 1,650 freestyle title, also in a school record of 17:44.7. The duo became the fifth and sixth state champions in the program's 13-year history (three men and three women).
Fehr, who led the Hawks women to a sixth-place team finish with 253 points, also took second in the 200 breast in a school record of 2:20.49.
Houborg had a sensational meet with a total of three school records, to go along with a second in the 500 free (5:04.13) and third in the 200 free (1:55.67).
"A really good state meet, yeah," Las Positas head coach Jason Craighead said. "We were within striking distance of being on the podium (on the women's side). We were not very far out of third place as a team. This was probably the fastest meet that we've had in a long time."
On the men's side, the Hawks finished 12th overall, also led by Nathanael Ridosko, who broke two school records (200 free and 500 free). He was third in the 200 free.
"There were some really amazing races," Craighead said. Fehr won the 100 breast title by eight one-hundredths of a second (.08) over Analiese Duncan of Orange Coast, and was out-touched in the 200 breast by 12 one-hundredths of a second (.12) by Duncan. In both races combined, with 3 minutes and 24 seconds of racing, the two swimmers were separated by a total of 4 one-hundredths of a second (.04).
Craighead thought the meet was big for the Hawks and the sport. "It was significantly faster or harder to qualify individuals this year than it has been in the past for quite some time, especially on the women's side. Very competitive," he said. "It's good to see that our sport is growing and getting faster at the same time. It makes it tougher."
He called it probably the program's third-best finish at the state meet. The women have finished third and fourth in consecutive years, in 2016 and 2017, and the men were fifth and fourth in the same two years.
Here are the past Las Positas state champions:
McKenna Stevulak, 50 back – 2013; Esteban Perez del Rio, 100 free – 2019; Marcu Holunga, 500 & 1650 free – 2023; and Zach Zauhar Kurr, 400 IM – 2024.
