Hawks Win The Play In

By Matt Schwab

Jayden Helm and Camryn Hobizal had three goals apiece, and the Las Positas women's water polo team showed how far it's come in a 7-4 triumph over College of San Mateo in a Coast Conference play-in game on Nov. 5.

The Hawks will face host Merced in the conference tournament semifinals at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 7.

"It was a great game," Las Positas head coach Kate Faix Bennett said. "This win puts us in the prime position to perform well at our conference tournament."

Bennett praised Hawks goalie Alicia Frost, who had a "stellar" game with 12 saves, including stopping a penalty shot. Madelyn Kennon added a goal to the offensive output.

The Hawks defense was tenacious and effective.

"We had a united defense all around," Bennett said. "It's fun to see the progression the women have had this season, and it's really coming together. Everyone on the roster has an important role to play and the ladies are finding success as a team."

Hobizal, a freshman driver out of Foothill High, scored three of the team's final four goals to effectively clinch the victory. Helm, a freshman attacker out of Livermore, upped the Hawks' lead to 5-3 with an unassisted goal in the third period. Hobizal tacked on two more goals in the period as the Hawks outscored CSM 3-0.

The Hawks, who are 3-17 overall, defeated CSM 12-8 in conference play on Oct. 22 in San Mateo.
