LPC hangs on to beat Compton in Hawk Classic

Taylor Marshall scores vs. Compton. LPC received a scare in the first round of the Hawk Classic on Thursday night but ultimately prevailed, 68-64 over El Camino-Compton Center in Livermore.

The Hawks (2-0) advanced to Friday’s 7 p.m. semifinal against College of the Redwoods, which defeated Marin 77-48 in another first-round game.

Friday’s 5 p.m. semifinal features Modesto, a 51-39 winner over Merritt, against Contra Costa, which coasted by Cuesta 90-53.

Jasmine Odell, who sat out most of the first half with 2 fouls, scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half to lead LPC over Compton. Cayla Nava hit 4 three-point shots in scoring 17 points, and Brianna Gay added 10 points.

Leading 9-7 after the first quarter, LPC got back-to-back threes from Nava to open the second period and build a 15-7 lead. The Hawks went into intermission with a 35-24 advantage.

That’s when Compton started its comeback. Compton scored 12 of the first 14 points of the second half to pull within 37-36. It evened the score at 41-41 moments later, then took the lead at 46-45 with 2:18 left in the third quarter.

Trailing 51-50 early in the final period, the Hawks got a bucket inside from Odell, a three from Nava, and a basket from Gay to go up 57-51 with 4:39 remaining in the game. After Compton scored twice, the Hawks went on a decisive 8-0 run after Nava followed in her own miss, Odell scored on a layup and hit two free throws, and Kristjan Aubrey made a layup of her own for a 65-55 advantage with 1:26 left.

Compton never got closer than the final margin of 4 points after that.

In Friday’s consolation round, Merritt plays Cuesta at 1 p.m., followed by Marin and Compton at 3.
